This work was created by Emi Kinuko, who was born in Kobe, two years after she relocated to Yokohama. Three nude women face each other in a circle, each in a different pose. Although the volumes of the human body are accurately captured, the artist’s interest goes far beyond verisimilitude. Rather, it seems she is interested in the issue of how to construct this space created through the presence of multiple human bodies within a rectangular frame. Furthermore, the entire painting is covered with thick, rough brushstrokes, demonstrating her keen sense of the texture of her paint. With this work, Emi was accepted as the first female member of the Kohdo Bijutsu Association, which had been established immediately after the war.
