Andy Warhol’s head appears at the center of a circle framed in black. The frontality of the image, with Warhol looking straight at the viewer, is unusual, allowing the viewer to observe his trademark silver wig, eyebrows, eyes, glossy lips, and lean cheeks. The circle surrounding his head and the image’s frontality suggests that it mimics icons of Christian saints. Robert Mapplethorpe is said to have created the photograph with classical sculpture and religious painting in mind. Warhol was of course a bona fide pop art icon with a cult-like following. This photograph shows him “deified” in accordance with Mapplethorpe’s unique aesthetic. (OSAWA Sayoko)
