Man Ray, who created many experimental works taking advantage of photography’s optical characteristics, was also known as a master of portrait photography. In response to commissions from artists, including his Surrealist peers, and celebrities, he left behind many portraits that showcase his technical mastery and natural wit.
The subject standing against a dark background, turning his head to face the camera and holding out his right hand, is Spanish painter Joan Miró. Man Ray has added an unusual element, a rope, in the background, bringing accent and movement to the image. At the same time, the rope’s curves and organic shapes are reminiscent of the irregularly shaped motifs in Miró's paintings of this period.
