With their sophisticated lenses, cameras can capture forms not perceptible to the human eye. This kind of photographic expression, which emphasizes the mechanical properties of cameras, began in the early 20th century. This shot of a commonplace green pepper is perhaps one of the most famous examples of a photograph taken using the camera to its full potential. The smooth texture of its surface, its fascinating shape reminiscent of sculpture, and the blemishes on its surface—suddenly the normally imperceptible expressiveness and uniqueness of a vegetable are made visible. When Evans took this picture, he shot it at an aperture of f/240 with an exposure time of 4–6 hours.
