The undulating shape is like a bird spreading its wings or large rolling waves. This piece is made by gluing together many layers of plate glass. Although Ikuta Niyoko works with glass, she does not use a melting furnace, tinted glass, or techniques like painting or engraving. Instead, she makes models from sketches and then creates full-size plans. Each glass sheet is then cut to just the right shape and glued together one by one. The greenish color where the glass sheets overlap adds depth and lends the work a unique charm that is both sharp and gentle. Viewers might find it relaxing to peer deep into the glass, or their spirits might be buoyed as they let their eyes slide along its dynamic edges. The artist says she hopes her art prompts viewers to have a dialogue with their own hearts.
