Against a backdrop of clear blue sky and sea, two gorgeous peacocks gracefully stand among colorful tropical plants. If you look closely, you can see small birds, butterflies, and spiders on the leaves and flowers—and each one of them is captured flawlessly. The artist’s chosen vantage point is deliberately close to the ground, as if to celebrate the tiniest lives in nature’s embrace. Perhaps surprisingly, the artist, Kita Kumiko, was raised in the city of Osaka. When she moved to Yokohama and set up an atelier, she started spending time observing nature in the vacant lot next door. Now those suburban encounters with nature have produced, through the power of her imagination, a utopia that no one has ever visited and that beckons viewers to paradise.
