This woodcut dates from the beginning of the 16th century. It shows the scene of Christ’s crucifixion, and the story is printed in text on the reverse. It was printed on one page of a book known as “Ringmann’s Passion” that was first published in Strasbourg in 1506. The author, Matthias Ringmann, compiled four Bible stories and translated them into German. The book became popular at the time as a German translation of the Bible was not yet available. The original drawing was made by a young Swiss-born painter, Urs Graf. Compared to the thieves on the left and right, who writhe in pain, and the soldiers wildly wielding their clubs, Christ hangs quietly. Meanwhile, the centurion (the commander of a Roman century) on horseback gazing up at Jesus realizes that this man was the Son of God.
