Sculptor Auguste Rodin held a solo exhibition to coincide with the 1900 Paris Exposition, and he asked his friend, the painter Eugène Carrière, to make the poster for it. In the painting, Rodin can be seen shaping the figure of a kneeling woman with her arms raised. Rather than being depicted as an all-controlling god-like figure, the sculptor is seen to tremble and marvel as a soul-infused figure emerges from the palms of his hands. Carrière often made this kind of monochrome painting, in which the light from some apparent life force seeps into a surrounding space, illuminating a figure. This portrait conveys the resonance and trust shared by two artists who both sought to invoke the human soul by emphasizing the contrast between light and shade, rather than by relying on color.
