The woman stands sporting a brimmed hat and a wide-collared jacket that tapers at her waist. Dressed in the latest fashion, she holds not a parasol but a men’s umbrella. Her name is Mary Cassatt, and she’s a painter who was taught by Edgar Degas. The woman sitting next to her is thought to be her sister. At the time, the Louvre Museum was one of the few places where upper class women could freely come and go. In this picture they are viewing one of its ancient caskets. The pair’s intellect can be sensed in Cassatt's sophisticated appearance and her sister’s concentration on her book. They encapsulate the image of the modern, self-reliant woman.
