Against a pure white panel, a female figure’s head is captured in close-up, with her left hand covering one eye. A rectangle of light illuminates an area from her ruffled cuff to her left cheek, as though she is shielding herself from the reflected light from a mirror. All this gives the figure such presence that the viewer has the illusion that he or she is the one who is prankishly directing the mirror at her face. A tubular collar is wrapped around the figure’s neck. Hans Bellmer made two dolls, and the use of spherical joints to make limbs move was also tried in the first doll. In this picture the second doll incorporates the face and hands of the first doll. The face is modelled with plaster on flax fibers covering a wooden skeleton, and the hands are carved out of wood. Bellmer was a master of drawing and a highly skilled sculptor, too.
