In the post-revolution 1920s in the Soviet Union, Aleksandr Rodchenko created innovative artworks that transcended established genres such as sculpture, stage art, and design. In the field of photography, he made many works with elaborate compositions using extreme close-up, downward-facing bird’s-eye views and upward-facing views.
This photograph is a typical example, showing an intersection and a streetcar in Moscow. Choosing to shoot with the light behind the subject matter, he has emphasized extreme contrasts of light and dark. A sense of movement is also created by his downward-looking perspective and by tilting his camera at an angle. These techniques combined with the urban subject matter create an image that conveys the dynamism of a modern city.
