This series entitled Keihin Machine Soul is one of the early works by Kanemura Osamu, a photographer who first attracted attention in the early 1990s. The images depict street scenes in Keihin, the area between Tokyo and Yokohama that is one of the nation’s leading industrial centers. Consisting mostly of inorganic materials like steel and asphalt, these landscapes are devoid of nature—and would hardly be considered "picturesque." Kanemura’s camera emphasizes the bleakness of the scenes, capturing in colorless black-and-white these places where people go about their daily lives. The photographs were added to the museum’s collection after being included in the 1997 exhibition "Absolute Landscape—Between Illusion and Reality."
