An apprentice builder balances heavy bricks on his shoulders. His lower body sinks into the shadows, and his face, bricks and left arm are in light. It was about 100 years ago that August Sander set about photographing his contemporaries in Germany—people of all ages and professions. He was attempting to preserve an era in photographs, and this is one of the shots that resulted. A century has now passed, and so it’s unlikely the boy is still alive. And yet his intense gaze still seems to reach out to us, proclaiming, “At this moment I was here, alive, on the other side of the lens.”
