Hirakushi Denchu studied wood carving under the Osaka doll maker Nakatani Seiko and was later strongly influenced by Takamura Koun, a sculptor steeped in the Buddhist tradition, and his disciple Yonehara Unkai. Denchu also looked up to Okakura Kakuzo (Tenshin) as a life-long mentor.
When making his wood carvings, Denchu used "pointing," a technique by which the original proportions of a clay sculpture can be accurately replicated in wood using a compass-like device.
Tao Yuanming was a Chinese government official and poet in the Six Dynasties period. After leaving the highly constrained life of an official, he poured out his inner anguish, determination, and expectations in his poem “Kikyorainoji” (Come away home). Made using the pointing method, this sculpture realistically depicts Tao Yuanming as he turns his attention to poetry-writing in the natural setting of his hometown.
