Two-thirds of the image is occupied by sky and clouds. By placing his vanishing point in the lower left, Hasegawa Kiyoshi has created the impression that the gigantic clouds are billowing high in the sky as they approach the viewer.
The work was created using a copperplate engraving technique called drypoint. It is a method of engraving the plate with a needle and lifting ridges of metal called burr along the edges of the engraved lines so that ink fills them and clings to the burr. The velvety lines that result are a characteristic of the technique. In this work we can see small pools of ink characteristic of drypoint in the lines giving volume to the clouds, their shadows on the ground, and the stems of the grass on the roadside. Cleaner lines can be created by scraping off the burrs. And by combining these two textures, Hasegawa Kiyoshi has created a dynamic landscape that vividly evokes the wind sweeping over the fields in the south of France.
