Suga Kishio arranges unadorned natural materials, like wood and stone, along with artificial materials such as metal, glass, concrete, and vinyl to create artworks through associations between material and space. This is one of the new works he made for a solo exhibition at the museum in 1999. Initially it was installed in a straight line in a long and narrow gallery. In 2017, at an exhibition of the museum’s collection, he devised a second method of exhibition, installing it in a U-shape within a circular gallery. Such adaptability attests to what is perhaps the essential characteristic of his art: that it responds to the particular spatial characteristics of the building.
