A woman has collapsed on a bridge. Behind her, men can be seen fighting. A full moon illuminates an ill-fated night. The scene depicted is where the woman, Osai, and her suspected lover, Gonza, are killed by her jealous husband. However, the suspicion was misplaced—a misunderstanding caused by complicated circumstances. Still, Osai, who was actually secretly fond of Gonza, chooses to be killed with him in order to protect her husband’s honor as a samurai. The image focuses on the hollow-eyed Osai’s appearance as she is about to expire. With an upwards-facing perspective almost urging Osai on, her prostrate body dissecting the frame diagonally, and the bright full moon hanging in front of her eyes, the work dramatically captures the depth of Osai's passion, including both her feelings for Gonza and her sense of duty to her husband.
