Three people are enjoying fishing in the soft light, with the man and woman in the foreground perhaps talking. Fukuhara Shinzo, known as the first president of cosmetics company Shiseido, took approximately 2,000 photographs during his stay in Paris (1912-1913). Later, he selected 24 of those photographs and compiled them in a book he called Paris et la Seine. The shots suggest a photographer shooting Paris and its surrounds to his heart’s content, inspired by the innovative artistic expression emerging in France at the time from the likes of Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse. Like the other photographs included in Paris et la Seine, this one uses soft focus to gently capture a scene of Parisian life. (MINAMISHIMA Ko)
