The graininess, high-contrast, and often tilted horizons in these photographs give a sense of the tumult in this town. Yokosuka, which has hosted a U.S. military base since World War II, suffered a litany of problems, from violence perpetrated against civilians by U.S. servicemen, brothels, and delays to urban development due to forced land requisition. Ishiuchi Miyako lived through this in a small apartment with her family from childhood to adolescence. The dark history she witnessed cast a shadow in her heart, and so to face those emotions, she set out into the streets years later to take photos. And then she gradually made prints from them. The images comprising this series capture the complex mix of emotions she felt, from hatred and disgust to nostalgia.
