What has been painted here is a target of the sort used in shooting ranges. Actually, I just wrote that it was “painted,” but it has in fact been “printed,” because this picture was made using the screen print technique. A fine cloth held taut in a frame is used as the printing plate, and the ink is squeezed through the pores in the cloth so that it is delivered evenly over the paper. And yet here, as though to undermine the technique’s inherent strength, an attempt has been made to create a sense of unevenness and volume in the ink. The artist created 27 screens to make this work. In other words, the final product is made up of 27 layers of ink. You can even see the ink dripping here and there. But those drips were probably added deliberately by the artist, who was also very particular about painting.
