Worpswede, a small town in northern Germany, is a beautiful land of wide moors that are crisscrossed with waterways and dotted with groves and farmhouses. At the end of the 19th century several painters moved here to escape urban life. Together they published the portfolio of prints “From Worpswede,” which included this etching, though on a different colored paper. The large larch tree’s dark branches extend across the breadth of a scene that is framed with floral ornaments. It is a summer evening, and the afterglow is filtering through the trees behind the moor in the distance. The big old larch makes for a dark but cozy hideaway. Artist Heinrich Vogeler acquired an old cottage in Worpswede, beautifully renovated it inside and outside, and named it Barkenhoff, or Birch Farm. For Vogeler at this time, nature provided the romantic scenery for his life. (NAKAMURA Naoaki)
