This work was made by Oka Shikanosuke in Japan after he had returned from a 14-year stay in France that began in 1925. Its composition is similar to another work also titled Bridge, which was completed by the artist in France in 1927. However, in this work a Western-style brick building has been added and a chimney in the center has been replaced with a fire watchtower. Japanese-style telegraph poles, bulletin boards, stonework and handrails have also been added. The following year, the artist created Window (in the collection of Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art), in which similar scenery is viewed through a window frame with a flower pot to one side. In this way, Oka took up several favored motifs repeatedly over the course of his career, sometimes referencing earlier paintings as he gradually developed his expression.
