This work was presented as an homage to Claude Monet’s Water Lilies series in "Monet’s Legacy," an exhibition held at the museum in 2018. At first glance, you might wonder where the water lilies are, and what the image has to do with Monet.
But look a little closer. Notice how everything depicted here is seen through or reflected in a window. The result is the scenery inside the restaurant is overlaid on the nightscape beyond. In this way, Fukuda Miran is recreating the way that the water lilies and reflections in the water overlap in Monet’s famous series.
Now it’s easy to understand what the tables reflected in the glass are being likened to, isn’t it?
