Berenice Abbott was an American photographer. After training as an assistant to Man Ray in Paris, she set out on her own in 1925 and, after moving to New York City in the 1930s, became known for aerial-view photographs of skyscrapers and other subjects.
In the period immediately after she left Man Ray’s studio, Abbott worked on portraits. One such portrait featured Fujita Tsuguharu (Léonard Foujita), a Japanese artist who was then the darling of the Paris scene. Although Foujita was always careful about his image, with his trademark bowl-cut hair, round glasses, and short mustache, this work does not emphasize such overt individuality, but instead shows the artist relaxing, cigarette in hand.
