Shimada Shizu resided in Paris for 20 years starting in 1958. There, she created paintings showing abstract forms that appeared to drift across the image, with thoughtful use made of blank space. She worked energetically, holding a solo exhibition at Galerie du Damier in Paris and also participating in many group shows. After returning to Japan in 1978, she resided in Zushi City, Kanagawa Prefecture. This work was created at her studio in the city’s hills. Diagonal lines and rounded shapes seem to overflow from the rectangular image, creating a sense of dynamism. Contrasting colors such as yellow and purple, and red and green are arranged rhythmically, and the borders between colors are left white in order to retain a light and airy impression.
