After graduating from the Western painting department of Tokyo Fine Arts School, Satomi Katsuzo went to Europe, where oil painting first developed, in 1921. In the fall of the same year, he visited Auvers-sur-Oise, where Van Gogh spent the last years of his life. In this town roughly 30 km northwest of Paris, Satomi met the painter Maurice de Vlaminck. This landscape painting, with its rough brushstrokes and dark, dramatic colors, shows the extent to which Satomi was influenced by Vlaminck. Pontoise is a city near Auvers-sur-Oise. The cathedral tower in the center of the painting is still there today. The image seems to convey Satomi’s youthful enthusiasm to follow the teachings of his beloved mentor.
